old inspiration…

This is an inspirational essay written by Mary Schmich in 1997 which was published in the Chicago Tribune. This essay has been most famously used for giving advice to high school seniors who are ready to go out and make it in this big bad world. Many of you may have seen/heard this essay. It was remixed into a song by Baz Luhrmann in 1998 called “Wear Sunscreen.” I think even though most of us have already past the threshold of graduating high school we can still take something from this essay and apply it to our lives in some small way. Below is the orginal essay Mary Schmich published in her column back in 1997..

“Inside every adult lurks a graduation speaker dying to get out, some world-weary pundit eager to pontificate on life to young people who’d rather be Rollerblading. Most of us, alas, will never be invited to sow our words of wisdom among an audience of caps and gowns, but there’s no reason we can’t entertain ourselves by composing a Guide to Life for Graduates.

I encourage anyone over 26 to try this and thank you for indulging my attempt.Ladies and gentlemen of the class of ’97:

Wear sunscreen.

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now.

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they’ve faded. But trust me, in 20 years, you’ll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can’t grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. You are not as fat as you imagine.



Don’t worry about the future. Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blindside you at 4 p.m. on some idle Tuesday.

Do one thing every day that scares you.

Sing.


Don’t be reckless with other people’s hearts. Don’t put up with people who are reckless with yours.



Floss.



Don’t waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes you’re behind. The race is long and, in the end, it’s only with yourself.



Remember compliments you receive. Forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.



Keep your old love letters. Throw away your old bank statements.



Stretch.



Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn’t know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives. Some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don’t.



Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees. You’ll miss them when they’re gone.

Maybe you’ll marry, maybe you won’t. Maybe you’ll have children, maybe you won’t. Maybe you’ll divorce at 40, maybe you’ll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary. Whatever you do, don’t congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either. Your choices are half chance. So are everybody else’s.

Enjoy your body. Use it every way you can. Don’t be afraid of it or of what other people think of it. It’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever own.



Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room.

Read the directions, even if you don’t follow them.



Do not read beauty magazines. They will only make you feel ugly.

Get to know your parents. You never know when they’ll be gone for good. Be nice to your siblings. They’re your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.

Understand that friends come and go, but with a precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle, because the older you get, the more you need the people who knew you when you were young.



Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard. Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft. Travel.



Accept certain inalienable truths: Prices will rise. Politicians will philander. You, too, will get old. And when you do, you’ll fantasize that when you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.



Respect your elders.



Don’t expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund. Maybe you’ll have a wealthy spouse. But you never know when either one might run out.



Don’t mess too much with your hair or by the time you’re 40 it will look 85.

Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia. Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it’s worth.


But trust me on the sunscreen…”

Some people may see a lot of cliches and be bored of this by now but I still love the inspiration I get from this essay. This light is turned off…

PS3 PS3 PS3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so happy. I just found out a couple days back that my mom as part of her company perks and pay bonus will get the choice of choosing a blue ray disc player or a ps3. so I jokingly told her get the ps3 and give it to me… so then she told me shes going to get one for me and asked me if I will use it. I was like omgoddd duh!!! lolll… So when I come back from the US I will be carrying my ps3 with me and omg Im so happy Ive never gota nything that cool before… my moms like “dont be like me and play all night and dont go to work tomorrow” lol.. I was like no i’ll be good.

She mentioned that because when I was about 10 or 12 when NES (nintendo) first came out she bought it for me and my sis and back then my sis was too little to be really interested or good at playing… so me and my mom played it all day and all night with my sister watching us play. we stopped and kept it paused for approximately 20 mins only to go into town and grab some food so we could come back and continue playing. We played all the levels and beat the end boss and then it was so late by then that she didnt send us to school the next day and she called in sick at work. it was the coolest day. lol… 2 yrs ago she surprised me with buying me my ipod classic 80 gb… that is my baby… now this ps3 will be my 2nd baby!!! Im curious to know whether shes getting in silver or black… mmm… i hope black but silver’ll look cool too… I have the best mommy int he world.. but not because she buys me presents. she told me she wanted to do this for me because she’s proud of me. how i’ve been taking care of myself and being independent and on my own working hard… it really means a lot to me to hear that more than anything in the world!!

Well My flight from Bombay is at 2am on the 14th (saturday) So I’ll be leaving from P by a drop service called KK travels which will come straight to my doorstep and drop me directly to the airport. since my check in time starts at 11-11:30 pm on the 13th of March they will pick me up at 7pm and drop me off at 11pm. shoudl be cool enough… there would be like 3 other passengers I guess so it should be pretty okay. better than a bus load full of people stopping and delaying and whining all the time!!

Im looking forward to flying though. I like travelling, I feel so adventurous and lively. I also have a thing for checking out airplane seats on different flights. Since most of them are all so advanced, I pray I get one like that to enjoy and relax. Most of the time I do since all of the airline have upgraded their comfort levels on even economy class seats… really nice seats, more leg space and the best of all… the latest movies to watch on your own personal tv screen which is on the back of the seat ahead of you, and at perfect viewable easy distance… I havent had the time to watch any movies so im lookingforward to catching some nice ones as corny as that sounds.

oh and I lovvvvve checking out the airplane food. Everyone always says it sucks, but i actually dont find it too bad. If you compare it to home food or restaurant food you’re never gonna be happy with it. You just have to enjoy it for what it is and be glad that they even serve food to you ont he 16 or whatever hour flight you’re taking.. lol… I must sounds like a complete dork after writing this but i cant help but checking it all out…

dont get me started on reviewing and checking out how nice the airports are. lol…I’ll be flying Jet Airways from Mumbai to London and then Ill be having a stopover at London Heathrow where i’ll be catching my connecting flight to California.

From london I’ll be flying Virgin Atlantic and I have heard A LOT of good things about that flight. I even got to see a sneak peek online through their website…  here’s a really funny advertisement for Virgin Atlantic that I found while browsing. pretty funny and cheeky/naughty actually but cool. (this is by the way referring to the number of inches on the tv screen you get for your viewing pleasure while flying in case I need to spell it out for you!)


Anyways enough of boring you,  Im out… My next post will be from Cali-Cali-forrrrrnyaaaaaa (California) byes!! this light is turned off…

exciting news… soon to be travelling!!! away-away-away…..

well as you can see peeps Im super happy pappy because my parents moved from NY to California….and they sent me a ticket 6 months ago to come visit….I’ve been away from the US for 3 yrs!!… and I’ll be seeing my family and having a lot of fun!!!! I am SHOOOOOOOOO excited… woo hoo… Im flying out of Mumbai to California on March 13th and will be flying back to India on April 17th. Over a month Im surprised my workplace even allowed such a thing. But i told them to let me go visit and I dont mind not getting paid for the days Im gone… hee hee… I have so much planned….skiing at Lake Tahoe, a weekend in Vegas with my sister, a weekend in San Diego for the Ranunculus Flower Festival with mom and dad, heres a pic of the festival I found online…. its breathtaking!!!

My family and I are also going to Boston to see my cousins R & H, I’ll be meeting them after 3 yrs as well so im really psyched and pumped up about it. My other cousins A & A are a little  smaller and Ive not really had the chance to spend lots of time with them since Ive been here in India they might be coming too so kinda nervous and happy bout that. Theyre 14 & 16 i guess so would be nice getting to know them… hope they like me. But I still hope Me and my cousins and sister can spend time away from them where we go out on a night on the town, probably to a pub and of course its not a trip to Boston without going to the Museum of Science. its funny cuz everyone has such hectic schedules but we’re finding a weekend even perhaps a day to meet just so we can spend time together. really happy…. My parents house has a nice pool and jacuzzi so i plan on swimming everyday… also its been my kind of secret wish to have a california bikini so my sister and i are gonna go hunt one for me. since im meeting a lot of my family members after a super long time i thought it would be nice if i picked up some gifts. ive got some really cool stuff including a sheesha for my sister. she doesnt know im bringing it…. its gonna be so exxctitititingngngg. blah im going now. too hyper to write anymore… this light is turned off..
